1. 尺度名。古代工匠量材伐木，以人头取度而名。

   《周礼·考工记·车人》“半矩谓之宣” 汉 郑玄 注：“半矩，尺三寸三分寸之一，人头之长也，柯樨之木头取名焉。”参阅 清 桂馥 《札朴·木头》。

2. 木材和木料的统称。

   辽 李齐贤 《五冠山》诗：“木头雕作小唐鸡，筯子拈来壁上栖。”《红楼梦》第十一回：“ 尤氏 道：‘我也暗暗的叫人预备了。就是那件东西不得好木头。’”《儿女英雄传》第六回：“一个弹子……一直打到东边那个厅柱上，吧挞的一声，打了一寸来深，进去嵌在木头里边。”

3. 用以喻人迟钝，不灵活。

   唐 寒山 《诗》之一三六：“世有一等流，悠悠似木头。出语无知解，云我百不忧。”《红楼梦》第三五回：“你姨娘可怜见的，不大説话，和木头似的，公婆跟前就不献好儿。”
