古代优秀的、典范的文学作品。也泛指古代的文学作品。

1. 泛指各民族的古代文学。

   中国 古典文学指先 秦 至 清 以汉语文学为主体的各民族文学作品，内容极其丰富，是我国宝贵的文化遗产之一。有时古典文学也专指各民族文学史上有定评的典范性作品。如 希腊 的史诗、悲剧，我国的 楚辞 、 唐 诗等。 郭沫若 《苏联纪行·六月二六日》：“他从前到过 北京 ，所研究的主要是 中国 古典文学。” 李一氓 《＜阿英文集＞序》：“﹝他﹞既搞古典文学，也搞通俗文学。”
