洗涤去污用的化学制品，通常制成块状。主要成分是高级脂肪酸的钠盐或钾盐。有的地区叫胰子。

1. 亦作“ 肥皁 ”。古代用皂荚或肥珠子等捣烂制成丸，用以洗涤去污者，均称“肥皂”。

   宋 庄季裕 《鸡肋编》卷上：“ 浙中 少皁荚，澡面涴衣，皆用肥珠子。木亦高大，叶如槐而细，生角，长者不过三数寸。子圆黑肥大，肉亦厚，膏润于皁荚，故一名肥皁。” 元 郑廷玉 《忍字记》第一折：“可怎生洗不下来，将肥皂来。” 明 刘侗 于奕正 《帝京景物略·金鱼池》：“﹝鱼﹞吞肥皂水得一死。”参见“ 肥皂荚 ”、“ 肥珠子 ”。

2. 近代洗涤去污用的化学制品，通常制成块状，沿旧称。一般洗涤用的肥皂用油脂和氢氧化钠制成。工业上用重金属或碱土金属盐的肥皂做润滑剂。
