汉语拼音：huáng dì

中国封建时代最高统治者的称号。也用来称某些君主国家的最高统治者。

1. 古时对前代帝王的尊称。

   《书·吕刑》：“皇帝哀矜庶戮之不辜。”《书·吕刑》：“皇帝清问下民，鰥寡有辞于 苗 。”

2. 三皇五帝的省称。

   《庄子·齐物论》：“是皇帝之所听荧也，而 丘 也何足以知之。” 成玄英 疏：“虽復三皇五帝，乃是圣人，而詮辩至理，不尽其妙。听荧至竟，疑惑不明。”一说，即 黄帝 。 陆德明 释文：“皇帝，本又作 黄帝 。” 郭庆藩 集释引 卢文弨 曰：“皇、黄通用，今本作‘黄帝’。” 汉 应劭 《风俗通·声音》：“昔 皇帝 使 伶伦 自 大夏 之西、 崑崙 之阴，取竹於 嶰谷 生，其窍厚均者。”一本作“ 黄帝 ”。

3. 封建国家最高统治者的称号。始自 秦始皇 。

   《史记·秦始皇本纪》：“王曰：‘去泰著皇，采上古帝位号，号曰皇帝。’”《史记·高祖本纪》：“甲午，乃即皇帝位 氾水 之阳。” 裴駰 集解引 蔡邕 曰：“上古天子称皇，其次称帝，其次称王。 秦 承三王之末，为 汉 驱除，自以德兼三皇、五帝，故并以为号。 汉高祖 受命，功德宜之，因而不改。”《二十年目睹之怪现状》第二五回：“ 北京 有个皇帝，你也没见过，你也説是没有的吗？”

4. 旧时借指赌场上的庄家。

   《官场现形记》第二一回：“我打摊打得气闷，既然要打摊，须得让我做皇帝。”
