中国早期社会只有贵族有姓，因此称百官之族为百姓。《尚书·尧典》：“平章百姓。” 战国以后泛指平民。

1. 百官。

   《书·尧典》：“九族既睦，平章百姓。” 孔 传：“百姓，百官。”《国语·周语中》：“官不易方，而财不匱竭；求无不至，动无不济；百姓兆民夫人奉利而归诸上，是利之内也。”《大戴礼记·保傅》：“此五义者既成於上，则百姓黎民化缉於下矣。” 清 陈鳣 《对策》：“古所谓百姓即百官，故《尧典》或与黎民对言，或与四海对言，非若今之以民为百姓也。” 范文澜 蔡美彪 等《中国通史》第一编第二章第四节：“百姓是怎样一种人呢？ 盘庚 说他们是共同掌管政治的旧人，是邦伯、师长、百执事（百官、百工）之人。”

2. 人民；民众。

   《书·泰誓中》：“百姓有过，在予一人。” 孔颖达 疏：“此‘百姓’与下‘百姓懔懔’皆谓天下众民也。”《论语·颜渊》：“百姓足，君孰与不足？百姓不足，君孰与足？” 宋 孔平仲 《孔氏谈苑·元旦占候》：“又云：‘芒种雨，百姓苦。’盖芒种须晴明也。” 明 高启 《赋得乌衣巷送赵丞子将》：“春风三月满京华，肯入寻常百姓家。” 杨朔 《昨日的临汾》：“村里的百姓大半全集拢来了：有驼背的老人，筋肉结实的壮年汉子，顽皮的小孩，以及穿着红绿衣裤的妇女。”
