落叶乔木。叶密集于小枝顶端，花单生枝顶，黄白色，有香气。树皮和根皮供药用，能温中、下气、燥湿、消痰。

1. 忠厚朴实。

   《商君书·赏刑》：“坚者破，鋭者挫。虽曰圣智、巧佞、厚朴，则不能以非功罔上利。”

2. 落叶乔木。叶倒卵形，多集生枝顶。初夏开花，白而香。木材轻软致密，不翘不裂，供细木工、乐器用。又为观赏树。中医以树皮入药，性温味苦辛，功能温中、下气、燥湿，主治胸腹胀满、泻痢、痰饮、喘咳等症。花功用同而力较弱。

   汉 司马相如 《上林赋》：“楟柰厚朴，梬枣杨梅。”《急就篇》卷四：“芎藭厚朴桂栝楼。” 颜师古 注：“厚朴一名厚皮，一名赤朴，凡木皮皆谓之朴，此树皮厚，故以厚朴为名。” 明 李时珍 《本草纲目·木二·厚朴》：“其木质朴而皮厚，味辛烈而色紫赤，故有厚朴、烈、赤诸名。”
