羊的一种，公羊多有螺旋状大角，母羊角细小或无角，口吻长，四肢短，趾有蹄，尾肥大，毛白色，长而卷曲。性温顺。变种很多，有灰黑等颜色。毛是纺织品的重要原料，皮可制革。

1. 亦作“緜羊”。动物名。羊的一种。角比山羊短小，略呈螺旋形。肉可食。毛白色，浓密而卷曲，是纺织品的重要原料。毛皮可制成裘，皮可制革。有的地区称胡羊。

   《宋史·外国传六·层檀国》：“畜有緜羊、山羊、沙牛、水牛、橐驼、马、犀、象。” 元 汤式 《庆东原·田家乐》曲之一：“线鸡长膘，绵羊下羔，丝茧成繰。” 明 马欢 《瀛涯胜览·忽鲁谟斯国》：“其羊有四样：一等绵羊，每箇有七八十觔，其尾阔一尺餘，拖着地，重二十餘斤。”

2. 绵羊性温顺，常喻柔弱的人。
