别称渝。中国中央直辖市。位于中国西南部。西邻四川，北邻陕西，东邻湖北，南邻贵州，东南邻湖南。市区位于长江和嘉陵江汇合处。襄渝、川黔、成渝铁路在此交会。面积8.23万平方千米。总人口3090万（2000年），市区人口289万（1997年）。依山建成，故有山城之称。是中国西南重要的工业、交通、文化中心之一。
