自然界大规模的火花放电现象。带有大量电荷的云接近地面或带相反电荷的云与云互相接近时，会产生激烈的放电。放电产生的火光就是闪电，产生的轰鸣声就是雷声。

1. 亦作“靁电”。打雷和闪电。

   《书·金縢》：“秋，大熟，未穫，天大雷电以风。”《后汉书·列女传·许升妻》：“是日疾风暴雨，靁电晦冥。” 唐 韩愈 《此日足可惜一首赠张籍》诗：“儿童畏雷电，鱼鳖惊夜光。” 郭沫若 《蔡文姬》第三幕：“忽然雷电震闪，大雨滂沱。”

2. 喻天子的雷霆之怒。

   《周书·尉迟运王轨等传论》：“ 颜之仪 风烈凛然，正辞以明节，崎嶇雷电之下，仅而获济。”

3. 以雷比刑罚，以电比人之明察，比喻朝廷严明的法律。

   《易·噬嗑》：“《象》曰：雷电，噬嗑，先王以明罚勑法。” 孔颖达 疏：“雷电欲取明罚勑法可畏之义，故连云雷电也。” 明 张居正 《答山东抚院李渐庵言吏治河漕书》：“故今振举纲维，精覈吏治，章之以雷电，悬之以象魏。”

4. 比喻执法严明，断狱迅速。

   宋 曾巩 《送程公辟使江西》诗：“ 程侯 昔使 西山 下，金印出怀光满把。坐驰雷电破姦伏，力送春阳煦鰥寡。”
