一年生或二年生草 本植物。植株像小麦。秆较软。叶片厚而短，色淡。有长芒、钩芒或无芒。子实可供食用。也指这种植 物的种子。

1. 又名牟麦，元麦。禾本科植物。一、二年生草本。叶子宽条形，子实的外壳有长芒。麦粒可食。麦芽可制啤酒和饴糖，麦杆可编草帽或其它用品。

   《吕氏春秋·任地》：“孟夏之昔，杀三叶而获大麦。”

2. 指这种植物的子实。

   《后汉书·酷吏传·董宣》：“年七十，卒於官，詔遣使者临视，惟见布被覆尸，妻子对哭，有大麦数斛，敝车一乘。”
