1. 认识文字。

   《宋书·沉庆之传》：“ 庆之 手不知书，眼不识字，上逼令作诗， 庆之 曰：‘臣不知书，请口授 师伯 。’”《水浒传》第三七回：“如今哥哥去时，小弟寄一封书去。只是不识字，写不得。” 夏衍 《懒寻旧梦录·从辛亥到“五四”》：“因为我识字，能记账，那位管事说，老板正要请一位记账的人。”

2. 谓知晓文字音义，精于训诂。

   唐 韩愈 《醉赠张秘书》诗：“ 阿买 不识字，颇知书八分。” 钱仲联 集释：“ 阿买 既能书八分，则公谓之不识字者，不识文字之形义耳，非如世俗之所谓不识字也。”《说郛》卷二九引 宋 叶梦得 《岩下放言·扬雄好奇》：“ 扬雄 能识字，亲作《训纂》、《方言》。《训纂》已不復见，而《方言》尚存。” 清 方文 《寄怀齐方壶》诗：“ 扬雄 识字惟 桓谭 ， 太白 知心仅 杜甫 。”
