1. 兼性互利共生，共生者可能不互相依赖着共存，仅是机会性互利共生。通常这种关系不包括两种间紧密的成对关系，而是散开的，包含有不同的物种间混合在内。例如，蜜蜂会访问当季许多种正在开花的植物，而这些植物有许多会受到多种昆虫授粉者的访问。植物与固氮之间的关系如豆类（如豌豆）和根瘤菌之间所发生的关系是兼性的。在贫氮土壤中，豆类从在其根部形成结节的细菌的固氮活动中获得很多受益，但当土壤中氮水平较高时，植物在没有该菌的情况下也能很好生长。自然界中动物—植物的互利合作除存在于有花植物与传粉动物之间外，还常见于种子传布，像啮齿动物、蝙蝠、鸟类和蚂蚁都是重要的种子传播者。
