旧指正史以外的传记。

1. 古代经学家称广引事语、推演本义的书为“外传”，与专主解释经义的“内传”相对。如《春秋左传》为内传，《国语》为外传；《诗》有《韩诗外传》，《春秋》又有《穀梁外传》、《公羊外传》等。

   汉 王充 《论衡·案书》：“《国语》，《左氏》之外传也。《左氏》传经，辞语尚略，故復选録《国语》之辞以实。” 三国 吴 韦昭 《国语解叙》：“﹝ 左丘明 ﹞以为《国语》。其文不主於经，故号‘外传’。” 唐 李肇 《唐国史补》卷下：“ 高定 ， 贞公 郢 之子也。为《易》……著外传二十三篇。”

2. 传记文的一种。为史书所不载的人物立传；或于正史外另为作传，记其遗闻逸事，都叫外传。如《汉武外传》、《飞燕外传》等。

   宋 张齐贤 《＜洛阳搢绅旧闻记＞序》：“摭旧老之所説，必稽事实；约前史之类例，动求劝诫。乡曲小辨，略而不书；与正史差异者，并存而録之，则别传、外传比也。”《红楼梦》第二三回：“想毕，便走到书坊内，把那古今小説，并那 飞燕 、 合德 、 则天 、 玉环 的‘外传’与那传奇角本，买了许多，孝敬 寳玉 。” 姚华 《论文后编》：“人以行殊，艺由类别，亦各为传，其附於文人名士者，虽颇似注，然亦以传名。其数之相比，常有不同：曰列传，言伦次也；曰汇传，言会归也；曰合传，数人一传也；曰别传、外传，一人数传也；曰附传，隶於他人也；曰託传，假设其人，亦借以赋物也。”
