地名 [dì míng]

1. 即地方的名称；为人类历史、文化、社会、政治、语言、地理等发展的综合产物。其发生为人类便于地理实体之定位、区别与利用等，而赋予特定名称。地名需具备指位功能、有一定之可辨识形态特徵，并为人们所认知及利用者，才可被命名。地名成因可分为显性（如：地形、气候、方位、交通等）及隐性（如：历史、语言、宗教、风俗、移植等）内涵因素，不同成因之地名，即具不同背景意义及地理属性。其发展阶段由初生期（鲜为人知）、稳定期（广为人知）而至消灭期（搬迁或废名）；且由约定俗成而至法规制定。而地名组成可分为专名与通名，其种类又可分为：正名、副名、俗名等。地名在地图中属符号之一类，且做为其他符号之辅助说明，如在某河流符号旁标注「大甲溪」，即代表该线符号之地理属性及其分布位置。地名除可代表当地之地理环境类型外，并可映命名时当地自然及人文地理特徵，故为多元而重要之地理资讯载体，因而极具空间分布与变迁研究重要性，亦为地图学研究之重要对象。
