多年生草本植物，叶子为三片小叶组成的复叶，小叶长圆形。开蝶形花，结荚果。是一种重要的牧草和绿肥作物。种类很多，常见的有紫花苜蓿。

1. 古大苑语buksuk的音译。植物名。豆科，一年生或多年生。原产 西域 各国， 汉武帝 时， 张骞 使 西域 ，始从 大宛 传入。又称怀风草、光风草、连枝草。花有黄紫两色，最初传入者为紫色。可供饲料或作肥料，亦可食用。

   《史记·大宛列传》：“﹝ 大宛 ﹞俗嗜酒，马嗜苜蓿。 汉 使取其实来。於是天子始种苜蓿、蒲陶肥饶地。及天马多，外国使来众，则离宫别观旁尽种蒲萄、苜蓿极望。” 唐 薛令之 《自悼》诗：“朝日上团团，照见先生盘。盘中何所有，苜蓿长阑干。” 明 姚士粦 《见只编》卷中：“ 海盐 翁学训 严之 ， 寿昌 人。为人严正，而接士宽厚。官贫斋冷，苜蓿自甘，未尝与寒生计束修已上。”

2. 马嗜苜蓿，故亦用作马的代称。
