“宅男”在中文中有两种不同涵义，褒贬因人而异。一般大众所说的“宅男”主要指长期足不出户的人，但又混入了许多不同概念。御宅族群体常将一般大众所说的“宅”称为“伪宅”。“宅男”原是称呼不同性别“御宅族”时的连用法，也称“御宅男”，这种用法在中国大陆依然普遍存在，“御宅族”与长期足不出户毫无关系。
