1. 没有原因或理由。

   《礼记·王制》：“诸侯无故不杀牛，大夫无故不杀羊，士无故不杀犬豕，庶人无故不食珍。”《史记·季布栾布列传》：“陛下无故召臣，此人必有以臣欺陛下者。” 宋 苏轼 《东坡志林·七德八戒》：“以 邓 之微，无故杀大国之君，使 楚 人举国而仇之，其亡不愈速乎？” 清 纪昀 《阅微草堂笔记·滦阳消夏录五》：“君子之於小人，谨备之而已，无故而触其锋，鲜不败也。” 杜鹏程 《保卫延安》第二章：“风不吹，树不摇，说你有缺点，也不是平白无故的。”

2. 特指没有发生非常的变故。

   《周礼·地官·调人》：“若无故而不用令者，罚之。” 郑玄 注：“无故，谓无丧祸之变也。”《孟子·尽心上》：“父母俱存，兄弟无故，一乐也。” 晋 干宝 《搜神记》卷七：“昔 魏武 军中，无故作白帢，此縞素凶丧之徵也。”

3. 犹日新。

   《庄子·秋水》“夫物，量无穷，时无止，分无常，终始无故” 晋 郭象 注：“无故，日新也。” 成玄英 疏：“虽復终而復始，而未尝不新。”一说犹无常、无定。 高亨 新笺：“故读为固。无故犹言无常、无定。”
