户籍管理机关以户为单位登记本地区内居民的册子，转指作为本地区居民的身份。

1. 登记户口的册籍。古时也称户版、丁籍、黄籍、籍帐。我国户籍制度建立于 春秋 、 战国 之交。

   《管子·禁藏》已有“户籍田结”的记载。《史记·秦始皇本纪》载 战国 初期政治经济尚较落后的 秦国 于 献公 十年实行“户籍相伍”的制度。《汉书·地理志》保存了最早的全国户口记录。以后历代均定期分类审编，用以稽查人口，征课赋税，调派劳役。 隋炀帝 大业 五年、 明太祖 洪武 三年都曾进行全国规模的人口调查。 清 雍正 时将丁税摊入田赋，户籍失去征调赋税的作用， 乾隆 三十七年遂停止编修。解放前旧 中国 的户籍属保甲制度的一部分。新 中国 的户籍记录各户成员的姓名、年龄、籍贯、职业、婚姻、文化程度等项，主要用于社会管理和人口统计。参阅 梁方仲 《中国历代户口田地田赋统计·总序》。

2. 居住某地区的身分。

   宋 沉作喆 《寓简》卷一：“国朝三岁发解，进士率以秋季引试，初无定日。举子姦计，多占邻近户籍，至有三数处冒试者，冀於多试之中，必有一得。”如：我住在市内，户籍却在郊区。
