1. 立法。

   《管子·任法》：“故圣君置仪设法而固守之。”《晋书·刑法志》：“今若设法未尽当，则宜改之。”《旧唐书·孙伏伽传》：“往者天下未平，威权须应机而作；今四方既定，设法须与人共之。” 清 孙枝蔚 《渔网》诗：“日落还垂网，天寒必放舟。前王初设法，汝辈苦多求。”

2. 施展法术。

   晋 干宝 《搜神记》卷二：“ 侯 乃设法，三人登时仆地无气。” 明 王守仁 《传习录》卷下：“昔有禪师，人来问法，只把麈尾提起。一日，其徒将麈尾藏过，试他如何设法。”

3. 筹划；想办法。

   《书·禹贡》“ 禹 敷土” 唐 孔颖达 疏：“ 禹 必身行九州，规谋设法。” 清 孔尚任 《桃花扇·逮社》：“我们跟去，打听一个真信，好设法救他。” 吴晗 《论海瑞》：“ 张鏊 又四处求情设法，这两个坏蛋居然摇摇摆摆回家去了。”

4. 犹办法。

   《平山冷燕》第九回：“﹝ 王衮 ﹞再查出 张寅 的卷子来一看，却又甚不通，心下没设法，只得勉强填作第二名。”

5. 宋 代酒肆有利用妓女坐堂作乐，招诱顾客者，称为“设法”。

   宋 王栐 《燕翼诒谋录》卷三：“ 王安石 新法行，散青苗钱於设厅，而置酒肆於譙门。民持钱出者，诱使饮，命妓女坐肆作乐以蛊惑之。小民无知，争竞鬭殴，则又差兵官列枷杖以弹压之。此设法之名所由始也。”
