汉语拼音：zǒng tǒng

共和国国家元首的名称之一。实行总统制的国家，总统既是国家元首，又是政府首脑；实行内阁制的国家，总统只是国家元首，不直接领导内阁。

1. 总揽；总管。

   《汉书·百官公卿表上》：“太师、太傅、太保，是为三公，盖参天子，坐而议政，无不总统，故不以一职为官名。” 晋 葛洪 《抱朴子·自叙》：“大都督给亲兵五千，总统征军，戍遏壃埸。”《隋书·李密传》：“ 翟让 所部 王儒信 劝 让 为大冢宰，总统众务，以夺 密 权。” 郑观应 《盛世危言·海防上》：“是宜就海军衙门王大臣中岁遣一大臣为巡海经略，总统北、中、南三洋海军。”

2. 旧称统率军队的长官。

   清 黄遵宪 《台湾行》：“黄金斗大印繫组，直将总统呼廵抚。” 王闿运 《衡阳彭公年七十有五行状》：“ 杨公 署 湖北 提督官，位尊，奏为水师总统，以公协理。”

3. 官名。

   清 制近卫营的长官称总统。如 圆明园 ，八旗内务府三旗护军营、火器营、健锐营、虎枪营等均设掌印总统大臣一人，总统大臣无员限；由王公大臣兼任。 清 魏源 《圣武记》卷十一：“其不隶都统者，则备折衝曰前锋，司宿卫曰亲军，扈警蹕曰护军，习远攻曰火器，皆别隶于总统。”《清史稿·礼志三》：“ 乾隆 十四年， 满洲 火器营始祭八旗子母礮神，总统承祭，如 汉 军祀礮仪。”参阅《清史稿·职官志四》。

4. 某些共和国国家元首的名称。
