高等学校的基本组成部分。与预科、专修科等相区别。在中国，学习期限一般是四年或五年。本科毕业是获得学士学位的必要条件。

1. 指进士科。

   《宋史·选举志一》：“ 开寳 三年，詔礼部閲贡士及十五举尝终场者，得一百六人，赐本科出身。”

2. 犹今科。

   商衍鎏 《清代科举考试述录》第三章第三节：“倘有因丁忧或别项事故，而不能於本科殿试者，可以声明事由告假，谓之告殿，准其於下一二科补殿试。”

3. 高等学校中的正科。相对于预科而言。

   巴金 《灭亡》第六章：“ 李静淑 到 上海 的时候，她底哥哥已经是N大学本科二年级生了。她也考入这个大学的预科。”现亦相对于高等学校的专科而言。如：你读大学本科，还是专科？
