1. 缘故，原因。

   清 李渔 《巧团圆·悬标》：“丑：‘不説还好，若説起原故来，只怕兄长也要动气，不但不劝，还要帮著我们打哩。’”《红楼梦》第二二回：“凡事都有个原故，説出来人也不委屈。”《老残游记》第一五二回：“他父女回説：‘不懂这是什么原故。’” 洪深 《电影戏剧表演术》第三章七：“难道演员为了要演戏的原故，真的去做一次贼，杀一次人么！”

2. 犹事故。亦指不便明言之事。

   《红楼梦》第一百回：“要是他急出个原故来，不但你添一层烦恼，我越发没了依靠了。”《红楼梦》一一二回：“不是前年外头説他和他们家什么 寳二爷 有原故，后来不知怎么又害起相思病来了。”
