古时房屋的通称。后来特指帝王的宫殿。

1. 房屋的通称。

   《易·繫辞下》：“上古穴居而野处，后世圣人易之以宫室，上栋下宇，以待风雨。” 南朝 宋 谢灵运 《山居赋》：“若夫巢穴以风露貽患，则《大壮》以栋宇袪弊；宫室以瑶琁致美，则《白賁》以丘园殊世。” 唐 韩愈 《原道》：“木处而颠，土处而病也，然后为之宫室。” 宋 叶适 《学校》：“今州县有学，宫室稟餼，无所不备。” 鲁迅 《汉文学史纲要》第一篇：“试察今之蛮民，虽状极狉獉，未有衣服宫室文字，而颂神抒情之什，降灵召鬼之人，大抵有焉。”

2. 指帝王的宫殿。

   《管子·牧民》：“夫明王不美宫室，非喜小也。”《史记·项羽本纪》：“ 项羽 引兵西屠 咸阳 ，杀 秦 降王 子婴 ，烧 秦 宫室，火三月不灭。” 晋 葛洪 《抱朴子·省烦》：“宫室尊卑之品，朝饗宾主之仪……皆可减省，务令约俭。” 唐 杜牧 《上知己文章启》：“ 宝历 大起宫室，广声色，故作《阿房宫赋》。” 宋 无名氏 《李师师外传》：“ 童贯 、 朱勔 復导以声色狗马宫室苑囿之乐。”

3. 指室内之人，谓家人。

   《荀子·大略》：“赐予其宫室，犹用庆赏於国家也；忿怒其臣妾，犹用刑罸於万民也。” 王先谦 集解引 郭嵩焘 曰：“宫室者，门梱之内，庭户之閒，尽一家人言之。”
