儒家的一种道德修养方法。指在闲居独处无人监督之时，更须谨慎从事，自觉遵守各种道德准则。

1. 在独处中谨慎不苟。语出《礼记·大学》：“此谓诚於中，形於外，故君子必慎其独也。” 三国 魏 曹植 《卞太后诔》：“祇畏神明，敬惟慎独。” 宋 彭乘 《续墨客挥犀·陶穀使江南》：“ 熙载 使歌姬 秦蒻兰 衣弊衣为驛卒女， 穀 见之而喜，遂犯慎独之戒。”《官场现形记》第二十回：“我们讲理学的人，最讲究的是慎独工夫，总要能够衾影无愧，屋漏不惭。” 李劼人 《大波》第一部第一章：“在这种不开通、不文明的地方，身当人师的人，那敢不慎独？”
