佛教指脱离家庭到寺院去做僧侣。道教全真派的道士离家到道观留居，也叫出家。

1. 离开家庭。

   汉 王符 《潜夫论·赞学》：“是故无 董 景 之才、 倪 匡 之志，而欲强捐身出家旷日师门者，必无几矣。” 晋 干宝 《搜神记》卷十七：“ 季 与同辈旅宿 庐山 下，各相问出家几时。” 明 刘基 《门有车马客行》：“居家倚骨肉，出家倚交亲。” 郁达夫 《登杭州南高峰》诗：“病肺年来惯出家，老龙井上煮桑芽。”

2. 到寺庙道观里去做僧尼或道士。

   《南史·齐纪上》：“自今公私皆不得出家为道，及起立塔寺，以宅为精舍，并严断之。” 宋 赵令畤 《侯鲭录》卷一：“ 汉明帝 听 阳城侯 刘峻 等出家，僧之始也； 济阳 妇女 阿潘 等出家，尼之始也。”《水浒传》第四回：“今有这个表弟姓 鲁 ，是 关西 军汉出身，因见尘世艰辛，情愿弃俗出家。” 鲁迅 《三闲集·柔石作＜二月＞小引》：“﹝ 释迦牟尼 ﹞从夜半醒来，目睹宫女们睡态之丑，于是慨然出家，而 霍善斯坦因 以为是醉饱后的呕吐。”

3. 指出家之人。

   宋 朱弁 《北人以松皮为菜》诗：“吾老似出家，晚悟愧根钝。”参见“ 出家求道 ”。
