1. 古人席次尚右，右为宾师之位，居西而面东。据 清 梁章鉅 《称谓录》卷八载：“ 汉明帝 尊 桓荣 以师礼，上幸太常府，令 荣 坐东面，设几。故师曰西席。”后尊称受业之师或幕友为“西席”。

   《红楼梦》第二回：“知他正要请一西席，教训女儿。” 清 钮琇 《觚賸续编·琵琶》：“帐中人疑其奸细，綑缚入帐，识为 金星 西席，乃释而询其故。” 邹韬奋 《经历》附录《我的母亲》：“母亲觉得非请一位西席老夫子总教不好，所以家里虽一贫如洗，情愿节衣缩食，把省下的钱请一位老夫子。”
