昆虫，口器坚硬，前翅狭窄而坚韧，后翅宽大而柔软，后肢很发达，善于跳跃，多数善于飞行。主要危害禾本科植物，是农业害虫。种类很多。有的地区叫蚂蚱（mà·zha）。

1. 昆虫。种类很多。一般指飞蝗，常成群飞翔。有的地区叫蚂蚱。吃麦、稻、玉蜀黍等禾苗，是农业上的主要害虫之一。

   《礼记·月令》：“﹝孟夏之月﹞行春令，则蝗虫为灾。”《三国志·魏志·武帝纪》：“蝗虫起，百姓大饿， 布 粮食亦尽，各引去。”《二十年目睹之怪现状》第一○八回：“弓兵道：‘今年上半年，这里 沂州 一带起蝗虫，把大麦小麦吃个乾浄，各县的县官非但不理，还要徵收上忙钱粮呢。’”

2. 比喻变卖产业过活的不肖子弟。

   宋 孙光宪 《北梦琐言》卷三：“不肖子弟有三变：第一变为蝗虫，谓鬻庄而食也；第二变为蠧鱼，谓鬻书而食也；第三变为大虫，谓卖奴婢而食也。”

3. 比喻贪婪掠取者。

   清 秦笃辉 《平书·文艺上》：“然儒中邪僻贪婪者亦多，今谓之蝗虫。”
