山西省的县。位于省东北部，为山区，中国佛教四大名山之一的五台山在其境内，主峰海拔3058米。佛教以五台山为文殊菩萨道场。

1. 唐 高宗 龙朔 中尚书、门下、中书、秘书、御史五官署均以臺名，合称“五臺”。

   《永乐大典》卷二六○六引《数类》：“ 唐 高宗 龙朔 二年改尚书省曰中臺，门下省曰东臺，中书省曰西臺，秘书监曰兰臺，御史臺曰宪臺，故有五臺之号。” 唐 刘肃 《大唐新语·忌戒》：“时以年饥，放国子学生归，又限令史通一经，时人为之语曰：‘……三馆学生放散，五臺令史明经。’”
