在加速运动的装置中，当装置的加速度方向同重力方向一致时，装置内的物体重量小于原来的重量，这种现象叫做失重。如宇宙飞船环绕地球运行时，它的加速度方向与重力方向一致，而且大小与重力加速度相等，飞船里呈现出失重现象，宇航员可以自由飘动。
