有些考试分两次举行，第一次叫做初试，第二次叫做复试。

1. 谓依旧例试士。

   《新唐书·选举志上》：“﹝ 元和 二年﹞明经停口义，復试墨义十条。”参阅 宋 王溥 《唐会要·贡举上》。

2. 谓恢复贡举。

   《宋史·选举志一》：“自 淳化 末，停贡举五年， 真宗 即位，復试，而 高句丽 始贡一人。”

3. 第二次考试，与“初试”相对而言。

   宋 洪迈 《容斋四笔·乾宁复试进士》：“ 唐昭宗 乾寧 二年试进士，刑部尚书 崔凝 下二十五人，放榜后，宣詔翰林学士 陆扆 、祕书监 冯渥 入内，各赠衣一副，及毡被，於 武德殿 前復试，但放十五人。” 清 俞樾 《茶香室续钞·赋题限韵》：“《容斋四笔》云……有 黄滔 者，是年及第， 闽 人也，九世孙 沃 ，刊其遗文，初试復试，凡三赋，皆在焉。” 张书绅 《正气歌》五：“ 志新 怎么会知道，儿子 彤彤 考沉阳音乐学院少年班，初试已经合格，却被取消了复试权。”

4. 有些考试分两次举行，第一次叫做初试，第二次叫做复试。一般是第一次考普通科目，及格后再考专门科目。参见“ 復试 ”。
