某些国家的军衔，军士的最低一级。

1. 官名。古代天子、诸侯都设有士，分上士、中士、下士。

   秦 以后亦沿用。《礼记·王制》：“王者之制禄爵，公、侯、伯、子、男，凡五等，诸侯之上大夫卿、下大夫、上士、中士、下士，凡五等。”《孟子·万章下》：“君一位，卿一位，大夫一位，上士一位，中士一位，下士一位，凡六等。” 唐 刘知几 《史通·史官建置》：“唯 周 建六官，改著作之正郎为上士，佐郎为下士。”

2. 今用作军衔，为军士的最低一级。

3. 才德差的人。

   《老子》：“下士闻道，大笑之。” 北齐 颜之推 《颜氏家训·名实》：“上士忘名，中士主名，下士窃名。” 唐 寒山 《诗》之二四○：“下士钝暗痴，顽皮最难裂。”《西湖佳话·葛岭仙迹》：“ 葛洪 道：‘草野下士，焉知方略？’”

4. 屈身交接贤士。

   《史记·魏公子列传》：“公子为人仁而下士，士无贤不肖皆谦而礼交之，不敢以其富贵骄人。”《后汉书·陈元传》：“陛下宜修 文武 之圣典，袭祖宗之遗德，劳心下士，屈节待贤，诚不宜使有司察公辅之名。” 明 李贽 《复麻城人书》：“以此见真正 高阳 酒徒之能知人下士，识才尊贤又如此，故吾以为真正 高阳 酒徒可敬也。” 邹韬奋 《患难馀生记》第一章：“临行时，仍由他的副官乘汽车护送，他亲自送至车旁，亲自代关车门，行一深鞠躬礼而别，颇能谦恭下士。”
