1. 表示时间。古以漏壶计时，一昼夜分为一百刻，至 清 初定为九十六刻。今用钟表计时，一刻为十五分钟。

   《汉书·昌邑哀王刘髆传》：“夜漏未尽一刻，以火发书。” 唐 刘餗 《隋唐嘉话》卷中：“及期，帝候日於庭，谓 淳风 曰：‘吾放汝与妻子别。’对以尚早一刻，指表影曰：‘至此蚀矣。’如言而蚀，不差毫髮。” 老舍 《离婚》十：“两位小天使在东屋玩了有一刻来钟。”

2. 指短暂的时间，犹片刻。

   唐 白居易 《短歌行》：“曈曈太阳如火色，上行千里下一刻。” 清 郑燮 《扬州》诗：“繁华一刻人偏恋，呜咽千年水不流。” 茅盾 《子夜》十：“ 杜竹斋 的脸色却一刻比一刻苍白。”
