1. 古代官名。掌管宣布京畿以外地区的王令、四方地志等。

   《周礼·春官·大宗伯》：“外史，掌书外令，掌四方之志，掌三皇五帝之书。” 宋 陈亮 《三国纪年序》：“自当时之诸侯，国各有史，一言一动，罔不毕载。故四方之志，外史掌之。” 清 黄遵宪 《三哀诗》：“我已外史达，人实高阁置。”

2. 指稗史及某些旧小说。如旧题 汉 黄宪 的《天禄阁外史》、 清 吴敬梓 的《儒林外史》。

3. 旧时文人常用作别号。如 元 张雨 称 句曲外史 ， 清 恽格 称 白云外史 。
