古代帝王居住办公的地方。也指君主国以帝王为中心的统治集团。

1. 帝王的住所。

   《史记·秦始皇本纪》：“ 始皇 以为 咸阳 人多，先王之宫廷小……乃营作朝宫 渭 南 上林苑 中。”《乐府诗集·郊庙歌辞八·汉安世房中歌》：“高张四县，乐充宫廷。” 唐 温庭筠 《再生桧赋》：“残阳未落，宫廷之林藪忽生；明月初悬，玉砌之桂华復盛。”《宋史·毕士安传》：“ 太宗 召谓曰：‘诸子生长宫廷，未闲外事，年渐成人，必资良士赞导，使日闻忠孝之道，卿等勉之。’” 曹禺 《王昭君》第一幕：“她在宫里有二十多年了，出入宫廷，是一个不很得意的女官。”

2. 犹朝廷。中国近代史资料丛刊《辛亥革命·关于南北议和的清方档案》：“未乱之区，或以宫廷不和，而妄相窥测。”《文汇报》1980.11.17：“宫廷是封建权力的中心。”
