多年生草本植物。茎直立，有 毛。荚果弯曲，呈褐色。主根甚长，粗壮，红褐色，有甜味。可供药用，有润肺、止咳和解毒作用。

1. 美草。

   《韩诗外传》卷五：“西方有兽名曰蹷，前足鼠，后足兔，得甘草必衔以遗蛩蛩距虚。”《庄子·齐物论》“麋鹿食荐” 唐 陆德明 释文：“荐， 司马 云：‘美草也。’ 崔 云：‘甘草也。’”

2. 多年生草本植物，根有甜味，可以入药。亦可作烟草、酱油等的香料。

   《淮南子·览冥训》：“今夫地黄主属骨，而甘草主生肉之药也。”《南史·夷貊传下·宕昌》：“ 梁天监 四年，王 梁弥博 来献甘草、当归。”《古今小说·张古老种瓜娶文女》：“好甘草！性平无毒，能随诸药之性，解金石草木之毒，市语叫做‘国老’。”

3. 荠的别名。

   北魏 贾思勰 《齐民要术·杂说》：“《师旷占》曰：‘……岁欲甘，甘草先生。’”原注：“薺”。 宋 陈师道 《后山谈丛》卷二：“谚曰：甘草先生则麦熟，苦草先生则禾不熟。甘草，薺；苦草，黄蒿也。”

4. 藤的一种。

   宋 王谠 《唐语林·补遗四》：“甘草非国老之药者，乃南方藤名也……以条叶俱甘，故谓之甘草藤，土人但呼为‘甘草’而已。”

5. 指茶。

   宋 陶穀 《清异录·甘草癖》：“草中之甘，无出茶上者。宜追目 陆氏 为甘草癖。”
