也叫南山。在甘肃省河西走廊与青海省之间。西北—东南走向，一般海拔4，000米左右。高峰有天梯山（6 400米）、祁连山（5 547米）。

1. 匈奴语意为“天山”。广义的 祁连山 是 甘肃省 西部和 青海省 东北部边境山地的总称。绵延一千公里。狭义的 祁连山 系指最北的一支。

   《汉书·霍去病传》：“ 去病 至 祁连山 。” 颜师古 注：“ 祁连山 即 天山 也， 匈奴 呼‘天’为祁连。” 清 赵翼 《张甥圣时俸满告归》诗：“ 疏勒 泉清禾满野， 祁连山 迥雪弥天。”
