《圣经》中作为显示平安的好征兆。《创世记》说，大地曾被洪水全部淹没。留在方舟（船）里保全生命的诺亚放出一只鸽子，鸽子衔着鲜嫩的橄榄枝飞回来，证实洪水已经退去，大地已经复苏。后来西方人就把鸽子和橄榄枝当作和平的象征。

1. 西方传说：古代洪水淹没了大地，留在方舟里的 挪亚 (Noah)，放出鸽子去探测洪水的情况，当鸽子回来时，衔着一枝新拧下来的橄榄树枝，表明洪水已经退去。见《旧约·创世纪》第八章。后世就用鸽子象征和平，叫做和平鸽。
