（约前565—前485）梵语音译词。意为释迦族的圣人。佛教创始人。姓乔达摩，名悉达多，古代印度释迦族人。释迦牟尼是佛教徒对他的尊称。

1. 约公元前563－前483年，佛教始祖。姓 乔答摩 ，名 悉达多 。为 中印度 迦毘罗国 王 净饭王 长子，母名 摩耶 。年十九(一说二十九)岁入雪山苦行六年，出山后，在迦 耶山菩 提树下，得悟世间无常和缘起诸理，即在 鹿野苑 初转法轮，说苦集灭道四谛及八正道，以后四出，凡四十馀年，年八十示寂于 拘尸那伽城 跋陀河 边娑罗双树间。“释迦牟尼”是佛教徒对他的尊称，意即 释迦 族的圣人。弟子甚多，著名者有 大迦叶 等十人，称佛门十哲。
