处理死人遗体的一种方法，用火焚化尸体，骨灰装入容器保存、埋葬，或者撒在地上、水里。

1. 谓把尸骸投入火中焚毁。

   晋 干宝 《搜神记》卷十一：“ 渤海 太守 史良 好一女子，许嫁而不果， 良 怒，杀之，断其头而归，投於灶下，曰：‘当令火葬。’”

2. 葬法之一。用火焚化死人遗体，将骨灰装入容器，然后埋葬或保存。盛行于古 印度 ，后随佛教传入 中国 。

   明 清 时官府禁火葬。《南史·夷貊传上·扶南》：“死者有四葬……火葬则焚为灰烬。” 唐 玄奘 《大唐西域记·印度总述》：“送终殯葬，其仪有三：一曰火葬，积薪焚燎；二曰水葬，沉流漂散；三曰野葬，弃林饲兽。” 清 顾炎武 《日知录·火葬》：“火葬之俗，盛行於 江 南，自 宋 时已有之。” 曹禺 《北京人》第三幕：“我死了，你就给我火葬。”
