古以十天干配十二地支，六十为一循环，有六个甲，即甲子、甲戌、甲申、甲午、甲辰、甲寅。此一循环，称周甲，又称花甲。古以此法纪年，六十年周而复始。后用“花甲”指六十岁：年逾～。

1. 亦称“ 花甲子 ”。指六十甲子。古代用干支纪年，以天干与地支依次错综搭配，六十年周而复始，故称“花甲”。后亦以指六十岁。

   唐 赵牧 《对酒》诗：“手挼六十花甲子，循环落落如弄珠。” 宋 范成大 《丙午新正书怀》诗之一：“祝我賸周花甲子，谢人深劝玉东西。”《西游记》第二十回：“﹝老者﹞道：‘痴长六十一岁。’ 行者 道：‘好！好！好！花甲重逢矣。’” 李準 《大年初一》：“今年是‘鸡年’， 阮辛酉 是属鸡的，六十年花甲子，到正月初一， 阮辛酉 算是整整六十岁了。”

2. 泛指年月、时代。

   清 孔尚任 《桃花扇·拜坛》：“年时此日，问苍天，遭的甚么花甲。”

3. 指年纪，年岁。

   《说岳全传》第六四回：“凡有人祭奠的，必是叛臣一党，即要拏去问罪。况且行文画影，有你面貌花甲，如何去得？”
