国家规定群众义务植树造林的节日。目的是提倡爱林护林，改善生态环境。中国曾于1915年将植树节定于农历清明节这一天，为纪念孙中山，1928年改为3月12日。1979年2月全国人大常委会规定，仍以3月12日为中国的植树节。

1. 为了动员全民植树而规定的节日。我国曾于1915年由政府颁令规定清明节为植树节。1929年为纪念一贯倡导植树造林的 孙中山 先生，又把植树节改在 孙中山 先生逝世的那一天，即3月12日。1979年2月23日，第五届全国人大常务委员会第六次会议决定，仍以3月12日为我国的植树节，以鼓励全国各族人民植树造林，绿化祖国，改善环境，造福子孙后代。
