海牛（学名：Trichechu ；英文名：Manatee）：仅1科1属3种。美洲海牛、亚马逊海牛和非洲海牛。海洋哺乳动物，形状略像鲸，前肢像鳍，后肢已退化，尾巴圆形，全身光滑无毛，皮厚，灰黑色，有很深的皱纹。以海藻或其他水生植物为食。海牛外形呈纺锤形，颇似小鲸，但有短颈，与鲸不同。体长2.5-4.0米，体重达360千克左右；海牛皮下储存大量脂肪，能在海水中保持体温；前肢特化呈桨状鳍肢，没有后肢，但仍保留着一个退化的骨盆；有一个大而多肉的扁平尾鳍；躯干基本无毛，仅嘴唇周围有须，头部有触毛；头大而圆，唇大，由于短颈，头能灵活地活动，便于取食；鼻孔的位置在吻部的上方，适于在水面呼吸；眼小，视觉不佳；高频听觉良好，低频则退化。生活于大西洋温暖水域，通常在浅海及河口，仅少数种类栖息在河流中。行动迟缓。雄海牛睾丸生在腹腔中。雌兽具双角子宫，环状胎盘。每年繁殖1次，妊娠期约1年，每胎在水中产1仔。草食。
