《圣经》记载，上帝在六日内创造天地万物，第七日完工休息。犹太教尊这天为圣日，名叫安息日（即星期五日落到星期六日落的一昼夜时间）。这一天礼拜上帝，不做工作。基督教以星期日为安息日，又称主日。

安息日 [ān xī rì]

1. 犹太教、基督教每周一次的圣日，教徒在该日停止工作，礼拜上帝。犹太教根据《圣经·创世记》关于上帝在六日内创造天地万物，第七日(星期五日落至星期六日落)休息的记载，定该日为安息日。基督教则以星期日为安息日。
