1. 宰杀动物。

   《管子·海王》：“﹝ 桓公 曰：﹞‘吾欲籍於六畜。’ 管子 对曰：‘此杀生也。’” 金 元好问 《续夷坚志·狐锯树》：“汝家父子，驴羣相似，不肯做庄农，只学杀生。”

2. 佛家用以指杀害生灵。

   晋 袁宏 《后汉纪·明帝纪下》：“佛者 汉 言觉，将悟羣生也。其教以修善慈心为主，不杀生，专务清浄，其精者号为‘沙门’。” 宋 朱翌 《猗觉寮杂记》卷下：“士大夫学佛不杀生，固善事。” 郭澄清 《大刀记》第一章：“﹝我﹞又是信佛教的，像杀生害命这种事，从来没有想过。”参见“ 十恶 ”、“ 五戒 ”。

3. 生杀。谓主宰生死。

   《管子·七法》：“予夺也、险易也、利害也、难易也、开闭也、杀生也，谓之决塞。” 汉 桓宽 《盐铁论·除狭》：“垂青绳，擐银龟，擅杀生之柄，专万民之命。”《三国志·吴志·诸葛恪传》“ 权 疾困” 裴松之 注引 三国 吴 韦昭 《吴书》：“ 权 詔有司诸一统於 恪 ，惟杀生大事然后以闻。”

4. 砍伐。

   《荀子·王制》：“故养长时，则六畜育；杀生时，则草木殖。” 杨倞 注：“杀生，斩伐。”
