学校中举行的规模较大或内容较全面的考试，有时指期考（跟“小考”相对）。

1. 清 制翰林、詹事的升职考试。凡詹事府少詹事以下，翰林院侍读学士以下，每十年左右，临时宣布召集考试。考试结果分四等，分别予以超擢、升阶、罚俸、降调、休致、革职。

   《儿女英雄传》第三八回：“紧接着又有了大考的旨意。这大考是京城有口号的，叫做：‘金顶朝珠褂紫貂，羣仙终日任逍遥；忽传大考魂皆落，告退神仙也不饶。’” 清 陈康祺 《郎潜纪闻》卷七：“﹝ 法式善 ﹞祭酒雄文邃学，清班二十载未尝一与文衡，两应大考俱左迁。”参阅《清续文献通考·选举八》。

2. 指科举考试中的乡试。

   《官场现形记》第一回：“且説是年正值‘大比之年’，那姓 赵 的，便送孙子去赶大考……仔细一打听，都説 赵相公 考中了举人了。”

3. 学校中学期终了的考试。

   巴金 《家》二九：“他们回到家里， 觉民 开始温习功课，准备大考。”

4. 称已故的祖父。

   宋 曾巩 《江都县主簿王君夫人曾氏墓志》：“曾大考，尚书水部员外郎，讳 仁旺 ；大考，右諫议大夫，讳 致尧 ；先君，太常博士，讳 易占 。” 宋 王安石 《尚书度支郎中葛公墓志铭》：“ 贯 ，曾大考也； 遇 ，大考也； 旺 ，累赠都官郎中，考也。”
