1. 指奉养的物品。

   《战国策·韩策二》：“臣有老母，家贫，客游以为狗屠，可旦夕得甘脆以养亲。亲供养备，义不敢当 仲子 之赐。”《礼记·月令》：“﹝季秋之月﹞收禄秩之不当，供养之不宜者。” 郑玄 注：“熊蟠之属。”

2. 培养，滋养。

   《左传·昭公十二年》：“内外倡和为忠，率事以信为共，供养三德为善。”

3. 赡养，侍奉。

   《汉书·翟方进传》：“身既富贵，而后母尚在， 方进 内行修饰，供养甚篤。” 晋 李密 《陈情事表》：“臣以供养无主，辞不赴命。” 明 都穆 《都公谈纂》卷上：“ 潞公 吴夫人 尚在，年已八十，瞽双目，无人供养。”

4. 泛指养活。

   《二刻拍案惊奇》卷十一：“﹝ 焦大郎 ﹞尽心竭力，供养着他两个。” 曹禺 《王昭君》第二幕：“难道皇帝不也是要百姓们供养。”

5. 奉祀；摆设供品。

   宋 孟元老 《东京梦华录·中元节》：“十五日供养祖先素食。”《清平山堂话本·合同文字记》：“ 张学究 夫妻两口儿，打点祭物，同 安住 去坟上祭扫；到坟前，将祭物供养。”

6. 指供品。

   《西游记》第四五回：“想是 三清爷爷 圣驾降临，受用了这些供养。”

7. 佛教称以香花、明灯、饮食等资养三宝(佛、法、僧)为“供养”，并分财供养、法供养两种。香花、饮食等为财供养；修行、利益众生叫法供养。供养就是礼佛，或施舍僧人、斋僧的意思。
