中国古代为传车、驿马通行而开辟的交通大道。沿途按一定距离设置驿站。传车、驿马即是驿站备用的车辆和马。

   《后汉书·刘昆传》：“先是 崤 黽 驛道多虎灾，行旅不通， 昆 为政三年，仁化大行，虎皆负子度 河 。”《宋书·柳元景传》：“会蛮垂至，乃使驛道为备，潜出其后。” 唐 杜甫 《秦州杂诗》之三：“州图领 同谷 ，驛道出流沙。” 范文澜 蔡美彪 等《中国通史》第三编第五章第一节：“ 唐太宗 接受诸部酋长所上‘天可汗’的尊号，并允许在 回纥 以南， 突厥 以北开一条大驿道，分设六十八驿，各驿有马及酒肉供往来贡使，称为‘参天可汗道’。”
