哺乳动物。体粗壮，头阔而短，耳小而圆，四肢短而强，前肢的爪特别发达，尾短。体背一般为土黄色，杂以褐色，腹面黄褐色。生活在草原、旷野、岩石和高原地带。穴居、群栖，以植物为食。是鼠疫、布氏杆菌病和兔热病的传播者。

1. 哺乳动物。全身棕灰色或带黄黑色，前肢的爪发达，善于掘土，成群穴居，有冬眠的习性。肉可以吃，皮可制衣帽。旱獭是鼠疫杆菌的主要传播者。也叫土拨鼠。
