汉语拼音：wén shēn

产生于世界各地原始部落民族的纹饰肤体的习俗。即经手术后在身体某部留下不褪色的图案。花纹有鸟兽花卉或图腾、经文、八卦等。反映其审美意识及宗教观念。在中国，高山、德昂、黎、独龙、傣、布朗、基诺等族皆有文身习俗。

1. 在身体上刺画有色的花纹或图案。

   《礼记·王制》：“东方曰夷，被髮文身，有不火食者矣。” 孔颖达 疏：“ 越 俗断髮文身，以辟蛟龙之害，故刻其肌，以丹青湼之。” 宋 孟元老 《东京梦华录·驾回仪卫》：“有三五文身恶少年控马，谓之‘花褪马’。”《新编五代史平话·汉史》：“ 刘知远 出去将钱雇倩针笔匠文身，左手刺个仙女，右手刺一条抢寳青龙，背脊上刺一个笑天夜叉。” 清 洪颐煊 《读书丛录》卷十八：“断髮谓剪其髮，文身谓文饰其身。” 蔡元培 《民族学上之进化观》：“例如未开化的民族，最初都有文身的习惯，有人说文身是一种图腾的标记；有人说文身是纯为装饰……文身之法，或在身体各部涂上颜色，或先用针刺然后用色。”

2. 犹修身。

   北魏 郦道元 《水经注·渠水》：“余谓俊者所以智胜羣情，辨者所以文身祛惑。”《北史·常爽传》：“六经者，先王之遗烈，圣人之盛事也，安可不游心寓目习性文身哉！”
