哺乳动物。体形像老鼠，嘴尖，生活在田间，挖掘洞道。食昆虫等小动物，也伤害作物，对农业有害。

1. 哺乳动物。体矮胖，长10馀厘米，毛黑褐色，嘴尖。前肢发达，脚掌向外翻，有利爪，适于掘土；后肢细小。眼小，隐藏在毛中。白天住在土穴中，夜晚出来捕食昆虫，也吃农作物的根。古人常与鼢鼠混同。

2. 传说中的一种大兽。

   唐 张祜 《少年乐》诗：“带盘红鼹鼠，袍砑紫犀牛。”《太平广记》卷四四○引 前蜀 杜光庭 《录异记·鼠》：“鼴鼠首尾如鼠，色青黑，短足有指，形大，重千餘斤。出 零陵郡 界，不知所来。民有灾及为恶者，鼠輒入其田中，振落毛衣，皆成小鼠，食其苗稼而去。” 明 李时珍 《本草纲目·兽三·隐鼠》﹝集解﹞引 苏颂 曰：“鼴鼠出 沧州 及胡中，似牛而鼠首黑足，大者千斤，多伏于水。”
